2 Lions, 2 Women, 2 Kills, 2 Continents

Two incidents reported in two days which are worthy of Darwin Awards.  Two women have been killed by Lions in Africa and America, in what appears to be an absolute display of stupid, reckless behaviour.

The first and widely reported news is the death of a volunteer intern in at a private big cat park in California.  No one can understand (as yet) why the 26 year old woman entered the lion’s enclosure.  The privately owned big cat facility, known as Project Survival's Cat Haven, is normally closed on Wednesdays and has had no previous incidents since its establishment in 1993.

The victim has been identified as Couscous, a 4-year-old male, raised at Cat Haven, since he was eight weeks old.  The name of the 26 (24??) year old Darwin Award winner has not been disclosed, as of this writing is Diana Hanson. Cat Haven is located about 75km east of Fresno
:-P

On Tuesday, just one day before, in Zimbabwe, a lion attacked Daniel Muzarabani and Sharai Mawere, while they were enjoying some quality time together.  While they were busy with each other near some bushes at Kariba primary school, a ‘jealous’ lion came on them and roared.  Daniel who was side-by-side with Sharai managed to jump up, and ran away, buck naked.  Poor Sharai Mawere was mauled to death by the lion.  Daniel Muzarabani is, incidentally, a fisherman by profession.

But that was not the end of the story.  As those lions (yes, more than two lions are suspected now) were being tracked and ‘baited’ by Rangers, a third lion ambushed the trackers.  In the ensuing melee, one Ranger managed to shoot another senior Ranger on his thigh.  The victim, that is the poor Ranger, is yet to be identified.

Fisherman and Forest Guard coming across a man-eater, letting off shots and running away in blind panic.  I don’t know whether any Bears were involved, but reminds me of the Jim Corbett adventure in The Mohan Man-eater [http://www.bookrags.com/studyguide-man-eaters-of-kumaon/chapanal006.html].

If not for the tragic circumstances, I would have laughed side-by-side (pun intended).
