Doodle on Yoga Guru B.K.S. Iyengar

On what would have been his 97th birthday, the Doodler Kevin Laughlin used a few of the yoga master B.K.S. Iyengar’s poses, or asanas, for a Google Doodle.  B.K.S. Iyengar, and not PM Narendra Modi as some would have us believe, is considered to be the foremost promoter of modern Yoga.

He was born on 14 December 1918 and passed away just last year (2014).  In 1952 the then obscure ‘Iyengar Yoga’ teacher met the violinist Yehudi Menuhin, and taught him yoga.  Menuhin, then promoted B.K.S. Iyengar, and the modern Yoga took off.

Google has three different doodles today, displayed on its homepage, almost worldwide; the exceptions are the Islamic countries, and the communist China, and the reasons are obvious.  These are places where Yoga is opined, or thought of as inseparable from Hindu religion.

Whatever you think, here are the 3 doodles honouring B.K.S. Iyengar.
