Tropical Cyclone 04B HELEN making landfall

Tropical Cyclone 04B christened Helen with strong winds and heavy rain, is making landfall on the Andhra Coast right now.  A slow mover by Bay of Bengal standards, she meandered across the Bay, as though trying to decide where to make landfall.

Finally making her decision, Tropical Cyclone 04B Helen is cross the coast over the cities of Machilipatnam - Bhimavaram - Rajahmundry, today and is expected to weaken once over land.  Though the forecast is for showers throughout the weekend.

Here is a recent IR satellite image overlay on Google Maps of the Tropical Cyclone 04B Helen making landfall.

A broader view of the Bay of Bengal which shows clear skies over Chennai.

No wonder the Chennai skies are clear, for TC 04B Helen is ~211 NM (390 KM) North of the Metro.

As she dissipates after making landfall, attention will turn to the Andaman Sea (bottom right corner) where conditions are optimal for another tropical cyclone to swirl up.  If that one develops into a full fledged cyclone, we can expect more rains over the next week.

Hopefully, she will move much closer to Chennai that Helen did and bless us with some much needed rains.  Incidentally, if ever she materializes into a Tropical Cyclone, she will be named ‘Lehar’.  The name of the current cyclone ‘Helen’ is by Bangladesh and naming of the next one will be by India from the lists already provided.
