5000 years of Religion in 90 seconds

Is religion only 5000 years old?  If we say so, it is going to attract flak from every sides of the religious divides.  For Hindu chauvinists would claim that Hinduism is older than 5000 years.  Evangelists would claim that the true religion is only 2000 years or so old.  The Taliban might bristle at both with a far shorter timeline.

Keeping those divisions aside, is there a convenient, cohesive view of what and how the major religions of the world have established themselves?  Yes, there is a short flash presentation, and fascinating, it is.

This beautiful time lapse flash animation by Maps of War shows how the 4 major religions of the world - Hinduism, Buddhism, Christianity and Islam - have established themselves.

Like anything which tries to summarize huge volume of information, not everything can be squeezed in.

Some other religions are not represented here - like Jainism and Sikhism.  Or even more esoteric faiths like Taoism, Zoroastrianism, and Shinto.

Likewise, it would be nicer still if the animations differentiates the sects within the Christian faith, Catholic and Protestant, as also the Sunni and Shia divide in Islam had been shown.  But that is asking too much.

This is not the only interesting Map at Maps of War.  The March of Democracy is also quite educative.  Have a look.

BTW look at the Labels for this post: Religion and Web-Tech - something which we do not expect to see together!

  2. Hi Namo, I have problems signing this petition. Apart from whether #NaMo's acceotance (or not), issuing a visa to an individual is a sovereign Nation State's prerogative. As such, no one who is not a citizen of that particular country (denying or granting visas) should have any say in the matter. Since I am not a US Citizen, I cannot request/petition/demand the US Gov. to issue or deny visas to an individual. Sorry.
