Lee Child’s Never Go Back brings old Reacher

The last two Jack Reacher novels - The Affair (not to remember) and (Jack Reacher is not) A Wanted Man - were at best spiffy.  A Wanted Man was almost an unbelievable bore - except for one teeny insult, which no one seems to have noticed till now.  Lee Child seems to have grown in confidence in the year past, as his intended insult this time is more brazen - and again not one peep from Reacher Creatures.  More about them in the next post.

Getting back to Jack Reacher #18, Never Go Back, Lee Child manages to bring back the Jack Reacher of old.  In fact the Jack Reacher in this latest outing is even more proactively violent.  A sure-fire hit with Reacher Creatures.

Never Go Back follows the by-now usual plot of Jack Reacher wandering into a situation which requires him to detect, perceive, understand, use force and save himself and the damsel in distress.  Only this time the story becomes a little convoluted with the US Army as the backdrop.

Jack Reacher saunders into the headquarters of his old unit, the 110th MP, to meet its commanding officer, Major Susan Turner.  But Turner isn’t the CO and Reacher is hit with 2 pieces of shocking news, one personal and the other with criminal consequences.  Reacher fights to find Turner and clear his name, barely a step ahead of the Army, the FBI, D.C. Metro police, and 4 thugs.

Is it worth the Rs. 336 on Flipkart?  Definitely yes.  After a long time, this is a Jack Reacher novel which you simply cannot put down.  The story does drag a little in places, but it is only for a page or two and Reacher quickly makes amends.  Even if you are not a Reacher Creature, this one is a must read.

My disgruntled half dithers, ‘Too bad I’m not an Australian, QBD has a fantastic pack as prize in Jack Reacher Competition this weekend (27 - 29 Sep).  Surely I could win one!’

  1. Nice review man! I agree with your sentiments that 'A wanted man' was paramount to watching an attractive paint dry. Although I don't think this the best Reacher book I've read (my favorite is still 'The Enemy'), it's still a great ride Child takes you on. Good news though, and I cannot wait, in an interview with Elaine Charles, the host of the Book report radio show, the author mentioned the name of his next Reacher adventure: '20 seconds ago'.

  2. Thanks. I also think The Enemy was one of the best, if not the. IMHO, Those 3 books JR7 Persuader, JR8 Enemy and JR9 1Shot, were the best. Before that the character was just being built up. From JR10 Hard Way it started going down. The exception was JR 13 Gone Tmorrow which was again good. BTW did you read my next post? http://www.madmadrasi.net/2013/09/why-is-reacher-angry-at-puller-and.html

  3. Lol - well if names like Cotton Malone and Gabriel Allon start appearing in Child's novels we know he's getting a little paranoid ey :)
    I enjoyed your http://www.madmadrasi.net/2011/11/heads-up-reacher-creatures-puller.html also.

  4. or Virgil Flowers! LOL - I haven't read much of Cotton Malone (just a couple). Gabriel Allon also started to go down, but the English Girl brought back old Allon. BTW I've had a mind to post on coincidence abt novels with similar themes at the same time.

English Girl and another one (i forget) had both mistress as origin/if not core of story.

JK Rowling's Cuckoo calling and another one (a disturbed blogger/reporter as hero) had both women falling from balconies as central core/origin!

Months before we bad Bobby Lee Swagger (I think) and Lincoln Rhyme going after Drone shootings!

Am I the only one to spot it?
