Google rolls out New Tab Page for Chrome web browser

Right on the back of new Google Bar last week, Google has started rolling out a New Tab Page for Google Chrome users.  The moment I clicked open Google Chrome the ‘updated’ notification popped up.

The new Tab page is definitely an improvement for users like me, who like to check out the Doodles off and on.  It opens with the Google Search Bar and the frequently visited pages underneath.  A colourful Apps Grid is added to the Bookmarks bar, prominently labelled Apps(!)

Google claims that this feature is aimed at speeding up the search (and user experience) in Google Search.

These changes have been introduced in Dev/Beta channels about a month back and are being expanded to the Stable channel users starting 24th Sep.

While a little bit of eye candy is welcome in the new Tab page, people still wonder about the need for the search bar/box in the new Tab page.  The confusion is because, even otherwise, when we open a new Tab page, the cursor is auto positioned in the omnibar - to enable search!

Perhaps the reason is in the off-hand comment of the announcement that ‘This feature is built on open APIs so any search engine can create their own ‘new tab’ page in Chrome’.  So, the Google Logo and Search Box is just a mock-up for the other search engines to design their own new Tab page for Chrome.

Another, more practical reason maybe that voice search button is not yet available on the omnibar, while it can be done from Google Search Box/Bar.

Whatever, My impressed half enunciates, ‘the new Google motif coloured Apps button on the Bookmark bar is really cute.’
