Jayalalitha’s model, Pratibha’s kindness, Khap’s stupidity

It is easy for me to crow I told you so, though the situation and context might paint me as insensitive.  But then if I don’t promote myself, who else will do it?
>:->

All of a sudden, today, because of the brutal gang rape and murder of a woman in Delhi, everyone is screaming to hang the rapists.  I asked back in September 2011 why we are timid in putting criminals to death!  There weren’t any comments on that article, which doesn’t surprise me - the post has been read by less than 100 times.

Coming back to the protestors, what I wonder is how many out of them have participated in a human-rights rally against capital punishment at one time or another?

Just think about it.  The mob, for that is what the gatherings proved to be, is howling for the 6 alleged rapists to be put to death immediately, without due process of law.

While the administration as a whole isn’t ready to hang rapists and killers who have been punished with death sentence, under due process of law.  In most cases, their sentence has been confirmed more than once by the trial court, the High Courts in respective states and the Supreme Court of India.

Less said about the Khap Panchayats the better.  It is once more an I told you so moment.  Though there aren’t dedicated articles on khap panchayats, there have been stinging comments against them in Views under the News.

For all her rants against the rapists in this case, former President of India Pratibha Patil, still comes out as an opportunistic, sleazy and a dishonourable woman.  It is a shame that Mrs. Sonia Gandhi picked her to be the 12th President of India.  This is the same Pratibha Patil who signed, nay, rubber-stamped mercy petitions of murderers, rapists and killers before laying down office.

It is another I told you so moment as I decried her actions back in June 2012.  Almost every media house which is either entertaining or decrying and taunting the hypocrite today, weren’t so vocal back then.

Which brings us to the harsh measures proposed by the CM of my home state.  Jayalalithaa has called for stringent punishment for crimes against women, including castration and death.  That is a debate that might well go on for another 6 months.

The media no doubt will go to town on Jayalilathaa’s far reaching and strict no-nonsense approach.  Some of them may even try to build her up as a natural leader who can take up national issues forcefully, as an alternate or even as an equal partner in a Narendra Modi-Jayalalithaa combine.  That again remains to be seen.

Which makes me wonder about the Dharmapuri bus burning case.  The criminals who burnt 3 girls inside a bus back in February 2000 were cadres of ADMK party of which she is the leader.  Does this mean that Jayalalithaa, as the CM of the state, has no sympathy for the 3 convicts in death row?  I don’t know, but this sure is a post which might yet make the I told you so category.
