Wisdom of the Pharaohs flows down the Ganges

At last, the Govt. of India has woken up to the dangers of foreign money being slipped into the country in the garb of aid to NGOs and other social service organisations.

The money thus funded being used to disrupt Government policies and projects in the garb of protesting against environmental, economic or social disintegration and degradation.  Of late, the protests have taken a drastic turn, by moving away from the justifiable concerns of NIMBY attitude and instead donning the ‘my-way-or-highway’ principle.

Mind you, these foreign funded NGOs have assumed such hard, unforgiving, uncompromising and unreasonable attitudes, especially in matters which have an impact on economic and industrial development of the fast-growing economies.

Most of these NGOs are funded by the developed, mature economies of the West, especially the good old USA, and the Scandinavian countries, along with Germany and such others.  These are precisely the nations and economies which would be hurt by economic and industrial development in the BRIC, IBSA and other developing world.  As these economies power up, the World’s carbon footprint would increase, which ultimately would force the NGO funding economies to give in to the just demands of the developing countries, by
  • either reducing their own emissions, which means that their citizens would have to be told to sacrifice some creature comforts,
  • or by giving in to equality and justice by accepting that every human world over is entitled to equal amounts of carbon emission, per capita, which means that every Indian, Chinese, Latino or African would be equal to an American or a Scandinavian.
Which is what those funding the NGOs in the name of aid or grant must be worried about.  There is no way that an average Indian or Chinese would waste resources as the Americans and Scandinavians do.  I cannot foresee any eventuality where we would take a car to walk two blocks.
:-)
Thus at last a path breaking, shot-across-the-bows and surprising move by the Govt. of India to revoke the licence to operate and ban the activities of 3 NGOs involved in the anti-Nuclear protests in Koodankulam.  Surprising because, I, personally did not expect such a strong move from this Administration, as they have been so wishy-washy for the last 6 months [http://www.thehindu.com/news/national/article2929241.ece].

Now the forces and sentiments which plan, support, fund and aid these forces, no doubt, would howl, and point fingers  at the administration.  Even neutral, well meaning observers and admirers like Thomas L. Freidman might frown at this just as he did, maybe rightly, at the action against  US funded NGOs in Egypt [http://www.nytimes.com/2012/02/22/opinion/friedman-fayzas-last-dance.html?]

But what is surprising is that the principal national opposition party, the BJP, is not supporting the government action and seems to be acting a little dibbly-dobbly on the matter.  Perhaps they have been caught on the wrong foot?  After repeatedly beating the PM with the stick of being an American lackey, it must have been galling for them to see the supposed lackey kick his master’s back.

Kicking Donkey

My Wicked half whispers, ‘Now, if only they would shut down all foreign funding, including those of the madrasas which allegedly promote religious isolation, India would be a better place.’
