$1 Reeboks and $500 Stradivarius and iPhone 5 knockoffs

Some months back there was large hue and cry about fake Chinese Apple stores and ‘hiPhone-5’, a fake Chinese version of the (yet to be released) iPhone-5.  Mind you, I am not advocating counterfeiting or suggest that violation of copyright and intellectual property rights is correct or even understandable.
What I am trying to point out is a hilarious situation where we (meaning people all over the world), in general, seem to accept faking or counterfeiting, if only it is presented in the ‘right’ way by ‘right’ kind of people.

Right or wrong -1

3 days back I read on BBC that Adidas is planning to sell Reebok trainers for $1, in India.  What?  You don’t trust me?  It is totally, absolutely, one hundred percent real and you can read about it here [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-15873765].

Only, after reading it thoroughly we realise that they (Adidas) are not talking about the standard Reebok trainers, but a special, simplified, comfortable, durable and light model (yet) to be developed, which would be adequate for the rural Indian consumer to walk around; not the variety the likes of Binning Lyngkhoi or Shastri Devi use to train.
;-)

Adidas went on to further claim that the aim of the project is not to maximise profits but to "tackle social issues" by creating jobs.  Whatever!
  • The point is if it doesn’t waddle like a duck, doesn’t quack like a duck but just happens to resemble a duck, is it a duck?
Right or wrong - 2

Today, on BBC (where else), was the news that a couple of violin makers and a Radiologist have managed to replicate a Stradivarius.  If you don’t believe me, you can read all about it here [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-15926864].

Only on reading through we understand that the 3 got hold of a 307 year old Stradivarius and CAT scanned the violin, converted it into CAD format and used a CNC to machine the wood into a violin.  Since the CAT scan registered all the designs, quirks and faults (including warping of the wood, etc.) of the ‘original’ Stradivarius, the CNC machined almost a ‘replica’ or ‘clone’.

Guzelimian, Dean of Juilliard school in New York has welcomed it saying that it would enable emerging violinists (& other instrument players) to get hold of ‘state of the art’ equipment to further their aspirations/career.
  • The point is if it does waddle like a duck, does quack like a duck but just happens to be from a chicken egg, is it a duck?
Take a look - are Tweety and Daffy (or the eggs even) the same?

Once again, to put the record straight, I personally, and this blog does not profess, agree, condone or promote piracy, copyright or intellectual property violations of any kind.  My policy is either use the Free/Open Software or if you cannot find something good enough, pay for it.  Keeping that in mind, still …

My Naughty half natters, ‘If all it needs is ‘authority’ to make something a duck, maybe all it does need is for a poultry farmer to certify ‘the thing’ as a duck!’
