One rule for me and a different one for you - 1

That the politicians world over seem to have one common axiom - that they are special, different, above the common people and that they should not be held to the same strictest standards of ethics, morality, propriety and behaviour is a widespread belief.

Whether or not true, some recent actions by politicians as a class has done nothing to dispel that notion.
In the US we have
  • John Ensign in alleged fiscal violation during his extramarital affair with Cynthia Hampton
  • Tom DeLay allegedly laundered money with Jack Abramoff
  • John Edwards in alleged fiscal violation during his extramarital affair with Rielle Hunter
  • Arnold Schwarzenegger’s affair and love child with Mildred Baena
In Europe we’ve seen
  • The 1st British MP David Chaytor actually jailed in the Parliamentary expenses scandal
  • The French President Nicolas Sarkozy has an albatross around his neck with the Bettencourt cash scandal
  • The former French Finance Minister and the present IMF Chief Christine Lagarde alleged to have abused her position to favourably settle a case involving Sarkozy’s friend Bernard Tapie
  • Not to say anything about Silvio Berlusconi’s bunga bunga parties
In India the list of scandals is too numerous - Just google Wikipedia.
Thus it seems the contention that there is some truth in the above axiom - at least some of the time.
