Avast Anti-Virus goes mad

The free and pro versions of AVAST AntiVirus has gone completely crazy today morning.  It started screaming some trojan or other with every exe file it finds in a Windows PC.  Suddenly AVAST has gone mad and reporting false positives.  Avast forums are inaccessible and are being hammered.

My solution which seems to work is that:
Change the 'On-Access protection control' from 'High' to 'Normal'

Changed it back again to 'High' and seems to work without any screaming for last 30 mins.  BTW using AVAST build 4.8.1367 (Sep 2009) with VPS ver 091203-0

But in the 1st panic - I moved Spybots SD helper and Panda USB Vaccine to chest.  Got to reinstall them.  I panicked because I was downloading/installing 'Windows Live Writer' at the time and feared a trojan break through.

:-)

Good fun
update: 03 Dec 09 / 1830 hrs.  The VPS update 091203-1 has solved this problem.  Program also updated to 4.8.1368

  1. I never used Avast, because there are a lot of lags and issues with it. Time to time i am reading review with title "Avast goes mad" or something similar. The best protection for your pc is solving problems manually with guides from http://removalbits.com/ and malware removal. Active protection from standard anti-viruses is not very strong.

    1. I've switched over to Comodo Internet Security in 2010. This is a very old post. However, thanks for the info
