WLW Open Live Writer login problems

Windows Live Writer is dead as of 12 Dec 2015 India Time.  If the man-made Chennai Floods disaster could be topped by anything else, it is the Google’s decision to pull the plug on old authentication support for Windows Live Writer, which has a new avatar as an Open Source fork Open Live Writer.

The new avatar of WLW, that is Open Live Writer (OLW) stable release was announced on 9 Dec 2015, or 10 Dec India Time.  Promptly, without any warning, or time to see whether the supposedly stable OLW code is bug free, Google pulled the plug on the old authentication procedure.

Now, OLW volunteers are working their arse off to integrate OAuth 2.0 or the Blogger ver. 3 API (whatever the heck that is) into the brand new OLW 0.5 stable.

What a timing to deprecate something.  Everyone knows that WLW is the most popular tool for Blogger platform & nothing else even comes close to it. So what if OLW stable has been released on 9th?  Should Google have pulled the plug on 11th? Couldn't they have waited/alerted OLW to get the Oauth 2.0 fix IN and then deprecated it?

Heaven would not have fallen down if they had done that - it certainly did not when Google extended the deprecation deadline for WLW from May till Dec, after talking to Microsoft.

Thank goodness that I did NOT uninstall WLW.  Open Live Writer doesn't even log in.  Now, at least I can do the write up on WLW and copy/paste into Blogger compose screen - but all other special things WLW can do, like pings are lost.  The most simplest, and the most liked feature of WLW was the auto save feature, which cannot work in the Blogger’s built in online composer.

What a mess Google.  Here is the screenshot of the failed OLW initial setup screen, almost exactly the same as the WLW update Blog account screen.

BTW the image has the BBC / NASA style slider control to compare the before/after images, using the JuxtaposeJS from Knightlabs.  You can drag the 'white' line to see the OLW and WLW screens.
