Shaky Anand holds off Carlsen in Round-4 FWCM2013

On Wednesday, the reigning World Champion almost lost it in Round 4 of the FIDE World Chess Championship 2013.  The game was a definite wakeup call for Vishwanathan Anand as Magnus Carlsen seemed fearless and on rampage, through most of the 64 move tango.

It was a virtual slaughter after move 18 when Carlsen made the bold move Bxa2, which almost turned out a game-changer.  Simulation and PGN file below.

My admiration for Magnus Carlsen has gone up after watching this Round 4.  After the mauling he took in Round 3, in which Anand somehow avoided to snatch victory, Carlsen came out fighting, and almost won the game and probably the match (if he had done so).

Anand was pushed to the wall for the first time in the match, and his fight back to avoid defeat will be studied for years.

In the words of Anand himself, ‘Things went horribly wrong, one illogical move after another… and (my position) was basically lost.’

Carlsen seized the moment, and should have been able to convert it into a win, but the Norwegian later said, ‘if only Anand had not created “obstacles” one after another.’
