What is new in Firefox 20 stable

Mozilla’s Firefox has been updated to version 20 on the stable channel, though not yet available at the Mozilla download page, which still points to 19.0.2.  Firefox 20 is already available for download from other (trusted) sources, for e.g., Major Geeks.

So What is new in Firefox 20?

As far as user experience and interaction is concerned there are 2.
  • per window Private Browsing;
  • new download interface.
Apart there is the ability to stop plugins which hang or do not respond without closing the browser, better load times, faster browsing, and HTML5 support for ‘blend’ mode.  When the official release notes are out, I am sure it will list some security fixes as well.

Per Window Private Browsing
Till now Firefox when switched to Private Browsing mode would close (actually hide) the existing normal window and open a new, Private window.  From Firefox 20, the behaviour has been modified to retain both the windows.  To explain it in even more simple terms, Firefox 20 will mimic Google Chrome’s action when a new incognito window is opened in Chrome.

New Download interface
The new Download User Interface (UI) in Firefox 20 is fantastic.  In fact, I would be happier if Google Chrome copies this Mozilla idea, as Safari have already done.  Instead of the dumb Download Box which used to interfere on the screen during downloads, the download indicator is shrunk like an extension icon.  By chance it also resembles the Google PR icon in appearance.

While a file download is on clicking on the icon drops down the download panel.  Once the download is completed the icon flashes a bulging green arrow while the download notification box also pops the information near the task bar - definitely a more non-intrusive, yet informative download UI.
