Can we prevent fatal crimes?

Let us revisit my earlier post ‘Stand with Sandy Hook’.  In that post, I had stated 5 incidents of violence which offhand came to my mind.
  • We had the case of shooting of Malala Yusufzai in Pakistan (9th Oct 2012).
  • We have the case of the gang rape of 23 year old in a moving bus in New Delhi (16th Dec 2012).
  • Unconfirmed reports say that there was another gang rape on Tuesday night (18th Dec 2012) in a bus stand in Uttar Pradesh.
  • On Tuesday and Wednesday, 9 polio immunization volunteers (at least 4 of them women and 3 of the 9 teenagers) have been killed in Pakistan.
  • On 5th Aug 2012, 6 people were shot dead in Wisconsin Sikh Temple.
The first 4 incidents I’ve quoted are criminal activity over which the society could have no control, in the normal course of events. Pakistan has deteriorated into a savage land. Rape is an individual man’s aberration, a man succumbing to the beastly, criminal and evil emotions. A society would be hard put to identify and control every emotional aberration in a human being.

The best we can do is to make sure socially, economically and security wise that we have the ability to intervene soonest when such criminal activity occur.  And make sure that the guilty are punished so harshly that it would act as further deterrent in (at least some) future cases.

But as far as Wisconsin and Sandy Hook are concerned, more careful gun licencing / control laws could have prevented them. The political class, whether Harry Reid type or John Boehner type, have completely abandoned their responsibility to their fellow citizens. A responsibility to ensure that measures are put in place to avoid or prevent danger to the innocents in the society.

They are willing to impose stricter Driving Under Influence laws.  Mainly because DUI can cause fatalities, and kill others.  But when it comes to NRA and guns, these guys carry empty guns (pun intended).

Come on guys.  Forget the rednecks with guns.  They hardly number 4 million moms and dads.  Think of 23 million children aged below 5 years in the schools of America [http://www.childstats.gov/americaschildren/tables/pop1.asp?popup=true].

Do something right on guns and don’t be a flake like Michael Reagan has been on his latest article.
