Google Doodle celebrates London Olympics opening ceremony

Google today marked the opening ceremony of London Olympics 2012,by dedicating a doodle reflecting the spirit behind the Olympics. The world's biggest sporting event will kick off officially in London on July 27 at 9:00 pm GMT (02:30 am IST on 28th).

The doodle displays three sportsmen & 2 sportswomen on track holding the letters of Google which also symbolizes the 5 circle logo of Olympics.  While the men represent football and track & field events (racing and javelin throw), the women show off swimming and fencing.  Perhaps to signify Google’s home country US, there is also a basketball lolling around, like an afterthought.

The 3 hour opening ceremony is expected to be watched by a global television audience of up to one billion, and will mark the beginning of 17 days of athletic endeavour.   Sneak previews of the £27 million ($42 million, 35 million euros) opening ceremony - filmed at Wednesday's final rehearsal - suggest it will be a grand but quirky production, reflecting the philosophy of director Danny Boyle of The Slumdog Millionaire fame.

An estimated 10,000 sportsmen and women are expected to participate in the XXX Olympiad, including 81 from India, and will create heroes, shatter dreams and fire national pride.  For us in India, it is going to be more heartbreak, I guess.
