Kerala and its all ado about nothing

Ever since 1976, there is a problem regarding the Mullai-Periyar Reservoir between my home state of Tamil Nadu and the closest relative state of Kerala.  If you don’t know what the problem is all about, you can read a brief here.

Anyway about 2-1/2 years back, in Feb 2010, the Supreme Court of India constituted a 5 member committee under the retired Justice A.S. Anand to take a comprehensive look at all the aspects of the dam.  It was to be done within six months, which was a little bit overboard.  The issue is too complex and sensitivities too hyped up for even eminent people like Justice Anand to dictate a decision in a few weeks.

Only people
  • who don’t give too hoots about the sensitivity of others;
  • who don’t mind taking politically incorrect positions when facts deem so, and,
  • who can at the same time point out our own illogical positions,
like me, for example, can pound out a post in a few minutes.

Just like I did in How many Indians wear flip-flops - on their minds?.  If you had been reading my blog from that time or before, you’d remember the hot discussion back and forth between a reader and me.

Unfortunately I moved over the Disqus commenting system a couple of months back and those earlier comments are yet to be imported into the Disqus system, as on date.

However, one of my last comments was that almost all the contentions of the Kerala regarding the safety of the dam is nothing but a bogey and my home state has every fact and rule on its side.  As I famously and offensively put it - ‘Kerala can go and suck its thumbs’.

Whether you liked it or not, believe me, it is what has been reportedly stated  in the A.S. Anand committee report, submitted to the Supreme Court of India - that the Mullai-Periyar Dam is structurally and hydrologically (!?!) safe.

In so many words the committee has concluded that the dam is -
  • structurally safe - the bogey that the 119 year old dam has become unsafe due to its age is bollocks;
  • safe in hydrology - the bogey that the reservoir is somehow affecting the Kerala water cycle is double bollocks; and,
  • seismologically safe - the bogey that the area is earthquake prone is bollocks of the highest order.
With so many bollocks cut off, the scare-mongers from the near, dear state of Kerala can and have nothing else to do, but sit around, twiddle their toes and suck their thumbs.
ROFLMAO
