Going Green is not always right

One has to agree with the Indian Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh that driving SUV’s in India should be considered criminal.  After all Diesel oil is heavily subsidized and often you find that the speeding SUV’s have just one or two persons in them.

In fact, India should do a China in trying to restrict all car ownership in the cities - even a simple rule like ‘No park, No car’ - policy would be effective.  Apart from congestion, traffic snarls and pollution, the buggers without parking leave the cars out on the street at night - and it becomes a pedestrian hazard - apart from others, stray dogs lie under them and scoot out or snarl when disturbed.  Either get the dogs out or stop the cars being put out.

But going Green is not Panacea.  Witness the two nation’s which tried to go green on Boxing day, 26th December and are staring at defeat - in the Cricket field, that is.

In The Ashes, the hosts Australia thought that the English were susceptible to hostile bounce and seam after the WACA test and prepared a green-top at the MCG.  They lost the toss and their strategy.

The Poms showed that the Ozzies themselves (at least the current crop) are no better under seaming conditions and Australia’s hopes of recovering The Ashes are gone.  To add insult to injury, it will be an innings defeat.

In the South Africa - India test series, the hosts tried the same trick at Durban.  Although Indians are not as adept at battling seam and bounce, they in turn showed up the Proteas that their batting can also be challenged.

If the remaining Indian batsmen bat out sensibly today, the series might be levelled.  OTOH, there is Jacques Kallis and Hashim Amla who are capable of taking the match away on their own.  Last but not the least, there are always doubts about Indian bowlers’ ability to clean up twenty wickets in a test match.

My Wicked Half whispers, ‘Would we finally agree with Ian Chappell that we have no champion fast bowlers after Kapil Dev and no champion spin bowlers after Anil Kumble?’

Update:  Within a day of my post comes the news that the city of Paris is planning to ban SUVs and gas-guzzlers - meaning the mad.madrasi way of thinking does make sense.
O:-)
